The Muslim youth of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have rejected the choice of the party presidential candidate, Senator Kashim Shettima as the vice of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to the Muslim APC youth, they preferred a Christian politician from the north to the former Borno State governor in order to strengthen the party’s fortunes ahead of the elections.
Abdullahi Saleh, the leader of the group, told reporters in Abuja on Tuesday night, July 19, 2022, that they strongly rejected a Muslim-Muslim candidacy in the 2023 presidential election, saying all Nigerians should be carried along in all spheres of life.
They held that while the APC presidential candidate had the right to decide who should be his vice president, such decisions should not be made against the collective sentiments and wishes of Nigerians with different views and beliefs.
The youths stated, “As stakeholders of the APC in the 19 northern states of the country, we find it worrisome that such a decision could be taken without considering the impact on the party’s electoral chances and the consequent turmoil such a decision could cause in the country.”
The youths also pointed out that it was worrisome that of all the political parties in the country, only the APC was presenting a Muslim-Muslim ticket, saying that in their opinion this was insensitive and showed a gross lack of respect for their Christian brothers and sisters.
They pointed out that the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is a Muslim from southwestern Nigeria and that it is politically and morally indefensible to choose another Muslim from the north of the country as his running mate.
The youths said they strongly believe that such a move could bring unpleasant consequences for the APC in the general elections, adding that the party leadership must hasten to correct this misconception.
The factional leader was of the view that there are credible candidates in Northern Nigeria with good credentials and a large grassroots following who could complement the APC presidential ticket in the presidential election and ensure the party’s success in the forthcoming polls.
He stressed that “the 19 APC States Northern Muslims Forum sees the election of Senator Kashim Shettima as a mistake that should be corrected with immediate effect by the relevant agencies within the party to ensure the collective existence of the country.
He explained that “the consequences of inaction in this regard can only be imagined, so much so that the majority of eligible voters in Northern Nigeria have decided to boycott the APC to protest the disregard and disrespect for Christians in the North, whose population and importance in the region cannot be overstated.”
He stated that the APC must respect the religious diversity of the county.
Therefore they are calling on President Muhammadu Buhari and Tinubu to replace the APC vice presidential candidate.
