EFCC to tackle illegal mining in three states

The Commander of the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Michael Nzekwe, has warned miners in the states under his command to pay the due royalties to the Federal Government or else face the wrath of the law.

He also hinted that the zonal command would shed light on the activities of illegal miners in Kwara, Ekiti and Kogi states under its command to bring the culprits to justice.

Receiving the new Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Commander for Kwara State, Ibrahim Muhammed, at his office in Ilorin, Michael described the non-payment of royalties to the government by miners as economic sabotage.

The commander said his agency was ready to strengthen the existing collaboration between the commission and the NSCDC in tackling illegal mining and non-payment of royalties by miners in Kwara State.

Michael described the NSCDC as a strategic partner in the fight against corruption, adding, “One of the critical areas where we will seek your cooperation is illegal mining.

“As government agencies, part of our responsibility is to fight corruption and preserve the sources from which government generates revenue for the welfare of its citizens.

“We cannot therefore sit back and watch people divert or steal what is meant for the government for personal use,” he explained.

The law requires miners to pay dues to the federal government,” the commander said.

“The Federal Government loses a lot from the activities of illegal miners, not only in Kwara State but across Nigeria.

“If proper procedures are followed and royalties paid, not only the federal government benefits, but the state government is also entitled to 13 per cent of the royalties paid to provide for its citizens.

He expressed delight at the cordial relationship between the commission and the corps, especially the recent deployment of some corps personnel to assist the commission in the management of some of its recovered assets spread across the three states of the command.

In his response, the NSCDC Commander of Kwara, Ibrahim, commended the EFCC for promoting inter-agency synergy in the fight against corruption.

He said the visit was to familiarise himself with the military and paramilitary formations, having recently been posted to Kwara State.

He called for further linkages between the EFCC and the NSCDC, saying collaboration was imperative as “no agency can do it alone”.
