Sources at the main market in Onitsha, the largest market in West Africa, have reported that fire is currently raging in a section of the market
A trader in the market, Mr Obi Barth Ifediora, confirmed the incident to DAILY POST, saying two blocks of shops have so far been destroyed by the fire.
The fire was said to have spread mainly in a part of the market known as Kano Street.
It was reported that the fire started on Monday morning and resisted attempts by the Anambra State Fire Service to put it out.
Confirming the incident, the chief fire officer in Anambra State said he immediately dispatched his men to the area when alerted.
He said, “The fire broke out around 1am and I immediately sent my men there.
“So far, they have refilled the fire engines with water twice and our men have gone a third time to refill water.
At the time of writing, the cause of the fire had not been determined.
