The Labour Party (LP), Imo State chapter, on Thursday rejected the constitution and inauguration of the OBI/DATTI Election Campaign Council inaugurated by Prof. Pat Utomi during his recent visit to the state, describing it as a joke gone too far.
The party said no one had been appointed to the campaign council for the presidential election in Imo State, describing the exercise as null and void.
It would be recalled that one Dr Fabian Ihekweme was allegedly appointed to the Imo Labour Party campaign council by Professor Pat Utomi at the banquet hall of Immaculate Royal Hotel, Port Harcourt Road, Owerri.
the Labour Party reacted to the development, saying it was aware that Professor Pat Utomi was in the state as the National Leader of the National Consultative Forum to attend the endorsement of Peter Obi as the presidential candidate of the Rescue Nigeria Project (RNP) and nothing more than that.
The release said, “Neither the State Working Committee, nor its Chairman, Dr Ambrose Onyekwere, nor the entire leadership of the party, including its candidates, stakeholders and members, were aware of the formation and inauguration of the OBI/DATTI Campaign Council inaugurated by Prof Pat Utomi on August 12 until it leaked to the public.
“When Prof Pat Utomi was approached by the state president about the matter, he asserted that it was a “gross mistake” which would be corrected.
“On August 16, a self-styled cell of the so-called Presidential Candidates’ Campaign Council visited the headquarters of the Labour Party in Imo State.
“Three of the visitors, including Dr Fabian Ihekweme, spoke and admitted on their part that there was a mistake during the inauguration in Imo State. They promised to work closely and harmoniously with the Labour Party.”
Responding, the Imo State Chairman, Dr Ambrose Onyekwere, clarified that the party in Imo State does not recognise the “Campaign Council” and drew their attention to the publication by the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party on the appointment of Charles Odibo as the Communications Director of the Presidential System Council of the Labour Party, which he described as unconstitutional and improper.
The Chairman also directed them to approach the National Chairman of the Labour Party and set the record straight.
“The Labour Party, Imo State, hereby reiterates our complete agreement with the position of the National Labour Committee of the Labour Party that the formation and inauguration of the Presidential Campaign Council in Imo State is a far-fetched hoax which can best be described as null and void and as such will not be recognised by the Labour Party, Imo State Chapter,” he said.
