Insecurity-Gunmen kill driver, kidnap eight passengers in Rivers

Armed men have killed a bus driver and abducted eight of his passengers in the Abonema/Degema/EmuohaEmuoha/Kalabari area of East-West Road in Rivers State.

It was reported that the slain driver, identified as Salvation Harry, who was conveying his passengers from Mile One Park in Diobu area of Port Harcourt, was on his way to Buguma before he was ambushed at one of the bad spots.

It was reported that the gunmen shot the driver like a commando and took all the passengers to a forest on Saturday night, though they fired shots in the air to ward off any threat and escaped unhindered.

Our reporter later learnt that one of the abducted passengers was released after paying about N150,000 while the others were still in captivity.

A driver who travelled the route and did not want to be named lamented that the frequent attacks had now led to the death of one of the drivers despite a protest calling on the relevant security agencies to address the situation.

“We had protested on our Kalabari-Emuoha-Buguma road because there were a number of kidnappings and our drivers and passengers were being shot at,” he said.

“Even the Commissioner of Police sent a representative. Since then, the kidnapping attempts and incidents have increased.

“But yesterday the worst happened. They killed one of our drivers called Salvation Harry, who is from Buguma. As I speak to you now, he is lying in Buguma mortuary. And the occupants of the vehicle are in the bush with the kidnappers.

“We don’t really know what to do because we have lost confidence in the government. It can no longer protect lives and property.

“Maybe because we are not violent and cannot carry weapons to protect ourselves on this road. We are tired,” he explained.

The eyewitness said the presence of security personnel on the road has not solved the problem in the area, accusing the police officers of drawing attention to people illegally transporting refined petroleum products.

He said, “The police are only concerned about collecting money from the drivers and exploiting the passengers.

“Their concern is the number of illegally refined products they are transporting. Otherwise, we would not have nine to ten security checkpoints on this road, and yet last night they killed our driver and kidnapped the occupants of the vehicle.

“We don’t know what will happen to the passengers in the bush. If they were able to kill the driver, we don’t know what will happen to the passengers.

“That is why we are appealing to the relevant authorities to help us. We are law-abiding citizens. Here we are feeding our families and taking care of ourselves.”

When asked, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident.

Iringe-Koko said the police had launched an investigation into the incident to ensure that the travellers were rescued and the kidnappers arrested.

She said, “Yes, we are aware of it and we have launched an investigation into the incident and a manhunt to ensure that the kidnappers are caught.”
