The Imo State Police Command on Wednesday ordered an investigation into the alleged killing of seven persons and injury of others by hoodlums in Umuafom, Orogwe Local Government Area of Imo State last Monday.
The command disclosed this in a statement to the press in Owerri signed by the State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Micheal Abattam.
The command, however, described the hoodlums as kidnappers and linked the killing to the armed group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
Police confirmed that seven people died in the incident, while six sustained injuries of varying degrees and were admitted to the Federal Medical Center (FMC).
Police stated, “On 8/1/2022 at approximately 10. 00 hours, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ogbaku Divisional Police Headquarters in Owerri, Limo State received a distress call that armed bandits suspected to be members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its offshoot, Eastern Security Network (ESN), came in a black Lexus jeep and three motorcycles with two persons on board each and shot sporadically at residents of a building in Orogwe, Owerri West LGA, Imo State, belonging to one Sir Chima Ogbuehi, who resides in Lagos, leaving some tenants with suspected fatal injuries. ”
“The Divisional Police Officer quickly mobilized his men to the scene with the support of a section of the command’s tactical teams. Upon arrival, the hoodlums had fled almost immediately, stealing a blue Toyota Sienna SUV, and the command’s tactical team quickly pursued them while the DPO and his men transported the injured to the Federal Medical Center Owerri and removed the bodies to the morgue. Regrettably, a total of seven (7) persons lost their lives in the attack while six (6) others were taken to the Federal Medical Center (FMC) in Owerri, Imo State injured.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Ahmed Barde psc (+), has ordered a discreet investigation into the incident and promised that the command will do everything possible to ensure that the perpetrators of this dastardly act are arrested and face the full rigor of the law,” the police said.
