Strike: University students support NLC and mobilize to protest

Following the announcement of a two-day protest by the Nigeria Labor Congress to show solidarity with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, some student unions and other rights groups have joined the call to action.

The National Association of University Students, in a statement  said its members were ready at any time to join the NLC in the protest scheduled for July 26 and 27, 2022.

The July 17 statement, signed by NAUS Vice Chair Mohammed Ibrahim, called on students in all states and the Federal Capital Territory to begin mobilizing for the nationwide protest to end the ongoing ASUU strike.

The statement read, “Solidarity greetings to you on behalf of Aluta, the NAUS leadership is greatly indebted to the leadership of the NLC for their unconditional commitment to Nigerian students. The announcement by the NLC to stage a nationwide protest is greatly welcomed in the student body.

To us, this is nothing less than a miracle; a heavenly intervention that could not come at a better time than now. We are therefore ready and able at any time to join this great movement of solidarity with the NLC.

“In the same vein, we also wish to acknowledge the great contributions, perseverance, courage and resilience shown by our members and stakeholders during the last protest in Abuja.

“Further to the above, NAUS will be participating in protests nationwide to demand the immediate resolution of issues between the Federal Government and ASUU so that our students can return to class.

“Consequently, all NAUS stakeholders, student union presidents, zone vice presidents, campus oversight committee chairs, members and the general public are hereby urged to mobilize, organize and prepare to participate in this unprecedented movement.

“By and large, all NAUS CMCs in collaboration with their various SUG Chairs are mandated to be part of the struggle with the NLC in their various states, including the FCT.

A rights group, the Take It Back Movement, has also called on its members to mobilize nationwide to join the NLC protest.

The Take It Back Movement supports the two-day nationwide protest called by the NLC over the ongoing ASUU strike. We are calling on students, workers and especially all of our members nationwide to mobilize and join the action in their respective states,” the group said on its Twitter page.

Remeber that ASUU has been on strike since Feb. 14, 2022.
