The Tinubu Support Organization on Thursday described as “unjustified” the attack on the clergymen who participated in the unveiling of the vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Kashim Shettima.
The group also clarified that the clergymen who participated in the event were not yet known in Christendom and were still building their missions.
In a statement issued by the group’s media and public relations director, Bayo Onanuga, the group claimed that the “clergymen were not counterfeiters, not mechanics or sweet potato sellers,” as was rumored on the Internet.
The statement read, “Tinubu’s campaign organization has described the viral pictures and videos of some Christian clergymen and women at the unveiling of the vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Senator KASHIM SHETTIMA, in Abuja on Wednesday as unwarranted distraction.
“At the well-attended ceremony held at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, the APC formally unveiled Senator Shettima to the public and its various organs as the vice presidential candidate of the party’s standard bearer, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“The TCO, through its Director of Media and Communications, Bayo Onanuga, let it be known that the event was an open affair for the public to attend, including the clergy and some others who are now being mocked by opposition stooges.
“We want to say that these clergymen were not fakes, not mechanics or sweet potato sellers as the hate preachers want Nigerians to believe on social media. They are not yet big names in Christianity, but they are gradually building their missions.
“They are church leaders who sincerely believe that Nigerians should shun the politics of hate and religious bigotry and instead pursue a politics of peace and nation-building,” he said.
“We therefore deplore the hysterical distortion of the presence of these men and women in cassocks and the false allegations against our candidates, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Shettima.
“The staged sensation on the social media about the presence of the men is unnecessary and only serves to distract from the great success of the momentous event on Wednesday.
“We believe Nigerians are too wise and astute to see through this hoax. Asiwaju Tinubu and his running mate and our great party are working very hard to provide purposeful leadership and good progressive governance that will improve the quality of life of Nigerians.
“We are well aware that the opposition parties and the sponsors of the charade on social media are nervous and feel threatened by the intimidating political credibility of our candidates. The only way they hope to divert the public’s attention from their uninspired candidates and their credentials is through social media.
“Our campaign is determined to focus on the core governance issues that affect all Nigerians to address them and achieve the desired improvements in the living standards of our people.”
